We have been for a Festive Afternoon tea at the Lanesborough, as part of our family tradition to go for it at the top London hotels every year before Christmas. However this year the Festive Afternoon Tea was neither English nor too festive, we were left disappointed by various aspects of the experience, which I will detail below: - the biggest disappointment for us was the fact that the tea was from TEABAG !! I mean it was good (albeit from a very limited selection), but I don’t expect at this level of luxury to drink from a teabag that I can buy in any shop, that’s a no-no for me - there are NO sandwiches – this is in the very fibre of the “afternoon tea” in England, without them its not a proper one. Instead there are a few “savouries” which to be honest are pretty bland and we were left unimpressed by them, to the point that we declined the offer to replenish - The whole hotel doesn’t feel too festive and in the restaurant itself there is NO symbol of Christmas anywhere to be seen, we could have been any evening of the year. Yes, there are some festive songs played on the piano, but its done in-between other normal songs. It doesn’t make you feel you do it for Christmas - the manicure of at least one of the waitresses could have been better, especially when you see this when they serve you. - there is no “Christmas cake” or mince pie or anything traditional Christmas English - you cannot replenish the sweets There were positives, such as the fact that the sweets were absolutely delicious and that we got extra scones, but its not enough for such a highly-regarded hotel and for the price we paid to have the Festive Afternoon Tea experience, which is by far the worse of all the top London hotels we have tried so far. We cannot recommend it, because we were left a bit deflated after all the hype of going to “The Lanesborough” and to be honest it wasn’t value for money at all. We would definitively not come back and I would advise anyone else to avoid it, unless i

The pastries can be described as average if not poor. For sure not what you would expect from a place sold as one of the best afternoon tea experiences in London. The ambience seems traditional but a bit outdated. The gratuity of 20% is automatically added to the bill, which is very uncomfortable, since it leaves little room for you to give what you think is fair for the service.

We had a fabulous afternoon tea at the Lanesborough hotel who managed to accommodate our complex dietary needs at a very short notice. The staff took care to make sure the food served was gluten free, vegetarian, dairy free and nut free. If I had known how courteous the hotel's kitchen was I would have mentioned a non-chocolate preference. It is wonderful to find a kitchen that genuinely can handle dietary requirements rather than playing lip service and then providing poor substitutes. Admittedly we ended up at the Lanesborough after a very bad experience with Fortnum and Mason (whom we had originally booked our afternoon tea with). Fortnum and Mason told us the day before the booking that they would substitute all cakes for fruit platters and that's all they could do to accommodate the nut allergies which was not great given that we had made the booking a week early and were told with only 24hours before our trip. Thankfully we discovered the Lanesborough could accommodate us and we had one of the best afternoon tea experiences I have had in London - excellent service, elegant back drop, wonderful ambience, lovely piano playing in the background and also delicious scones, tea and sweets. We will definitely be back!

About the restaurant

One of the most highly-acclaimed afternoon teas in London, Afternoon Tea at The Lanesborough is a multiple-time winner of the UK Tea Council’s Award of Excellence. With pianists in the background on select days, visitors can indulge in a quintessentially British tea, served in either the Venetian-style dining room, or the ‘Withdrawing Room’.

The exquisite Céleste dining room at The Lanesborough has partnered with the beloved, aesthetically pleasing pink bakery, Peggy Porschen, for an exclusive fairytale-esque afternoon tea. Working with the acclaimed baker Peggy herself, the tea will serve up signature bakes including a slice of one of Peggy's sumptuous layer cakes, classic sandwiches and scones, as well as speciality teas. Starring plenty of florals and pastel pinks throughout, there's no doubt this will be a unique and picturesque teatime experience. Available 5th August to 11th November 2021.

From 28th May until 4th August 2021, The Lanesborough presents “It’s A Little Bit Mad”, a Cruella-inspired afternoon tea and the latest in their innovative series of seasonal afternoon teas, which pays homage to Disney icon Cruella de Vil ahead of the new film release on 28th May with striking sculptural art. Expect a stylish celebration of fashion and rebellion, blending traditional patisserie expertise with an unexpected, modern aesthetic that is utterly Instagramable and “a little bit mad” – just like Cruella herself.

Enjoy a glass of the finest champagne with exquisite patisserie, and sumptuous scones with homemade jam and clotted cream. Afternoon Tea at The Lanesborough also includes a variety of finger sandwiches as well as an exceptional selection of teas and infusions. Vegetarian, vegan, halal, gluten-free and dairy-free options are available, please notify the restaurant no later than 48 hours in advance of your booking.
