8/10I have been once or twice before. The food was excellent the service however not. The below decks restaurant was quiet, but it would seem the demands of upstairs (weather was very sunny) was too much. We waited some time to order a cocktail, sometime for them to come, sometime to order our food, which did come in reasonable time. We decided to order desert having been assured it would come quickly but it didn’t. In the end we gave up on it and got the bill when we were told that a group of 24 had just ordered and it was not clear how desert would take. Our waitress Flo was great, she tried to hold things together. I would be careful about booking dinner on a sunny Saturday evening.

10/10Ive always wanted to eat here. Ive past it a few times when walking the canal with friends. I saw it could be booked through The Fork and so treated myself. The management and waiting staff were incredibly friendly and very helpful to explain and recommend dishes. Food was delicious snd plentiful. We had the 3 course Sunday roast menu. Worth every penny. We sat below deck and were nicely surprised at the cosy vibe, good music, lovely atmosphere. Next time I'd like to sit up on the deck. It was a sunny day. However I expect you need to book early to secure one of these tables. I will definitely go back.

7/10This restaurant was very quirky in that it was in an old barge on the canal. I loved the set up, as did my guests …. Something different is always exciting. We were greeted by a waiter, Scottish, who started out very enthusiastic explaining the menus. Straight away 3 of the 4 specials were gone but the tuna tartare was still available and we all went for it followed by mains of beef and monkfish all delicious. However then it went quickly downhill. We had drinks ordered to have with our mains but they were very slow to put up the order and then left them sitting on the bar for ages resulting in our not getting them till after we’d eaten. We had tried getting any of the waiters attention but it was nearly an exercise on how not to serve. We sat with dirty plates for an awfully long time and it took one of my guests to loudly ask could they be cleared. They were bar staff so we waited another age before we could order deserts to be told the last of our desired choice was no longer available. At this point we cancelled the other desert orders and the coffees and went somewhere else for after dinner drinks. So to surmise lovely food though limited in servings and inconsistent waiter service.

4/10We booked online and most of the info referred to the garden menu. This was not available to us. We were served fish with a couple of beef dishes. Service was extremely slow and most customers appeared to be chasing their orders. 40 minutes for starters. Food quality was poor and very expensive for what it was.

Dear Peter, we're sorry you didn't enjoy your experience. When you book online you show 'restaurant' or 'gardens' options.

8/10Service was painfully slow but they make up for it with amazing dishes. Both the duck and the ox cheek were as tender as can be.

9.5/10This is a wonderful charismatic restaurant with a cosy convivial atmosphere. We enjoyed the food (duck and beef) and the house wine by the glass. We just had main courses as we were off to the ABBA Voyage 15 to 20 mins walk away. Service was good and got us finished in time.

5/10The location was really fun and the ambiance was great, however the food took a long time to arrive and when it did, it was nice - but nothing special. Portion sizes were also very small.

2/10Being told once there that there wasn’t any table inside so offered to eat on the outside deck. We start being really cold and asked the waiter to bring us a few blankets but ignored us and brought them almost at the end of the lunch Service was slow and the waiter was really rude and not really polite Shame as the location is really nice Food was just ok really overpriced the final bill was definitely overpriced too
Barge East • Owner
Dear Mario, unfortunately you're booking slipped through the cracks, on a day when we were fully booked. We didn't want to turn you away and seated you outside on the front deck. Unfortunately we have let you down and didn't bring blankets up to you soon enough, we are very sorry about this. If you would like to discuss your experience further please email greg@bargeeast.com

Hackney Wick’s sustainability-forward floating restaurant Barge East has announced their summer menu, curated by their new Executive Chef Gavin Gordon (Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen and Gordon Ramsay’s The Narrow). Based around locally sourced, ethical, and seasonal produce (much of which is grown and handpicked at their adjacent Barge East Gardens), the modern British a la carte takes a ‘nose to tail’ approach to produce, with trim, offcuts & waste products all creatively used throughout. Starters include ‘homemade sourdough with wild garlic’, ‘British Asparagus, Dandelion, Chive Oil Dressing’, ‘Aged Beef Tartare, Smoked Marrow Croquette, Stilton, Focaccia Crumb’, with mains including ‘British Market Fish Over Coals, Bouillabaisse Sauce, Samphire’, ‘Glazed Aubergine, Mushroom XO, Cashew Cream, Seeds, Collard Green Shoots’, and ‘Wild Devin Rabbit Loin, Rabbit Boulangere, Rabbit Jus Gras, and Carrot’. To finish, choose from the incredible dessert offering including ‘75% Chocolate Ganache, Toasted Hazelnut, Extra Virgin Rapeseed Oil’, and ‘Rice Pudding Crémeux, Forced Yorkshire Rhubarb, Stem Ginger’. Diners can also opt for Barge East’s weekly changing, ultra-sustainable specials chalkboard. Diners at Barge East can choose from sitting in the light and airy canopy upper deck, with incredible views across the River Lee canal and the gardens, or the rustic main deck, a cosy sanctuary nestled within the lovingly restored hull. The space also features al-fresco seating above deck, perfect for sunny days and warm evenings and a captain’s cabin complete with a phone line straight to the bar - an 8-seat unique intimate experience for private dining with family and friends. Barge East proudly works closely with a network of local and sustainable suppliers to source the best ingredients for their menus. These include Natoora for vegetables (pioneers of no plastic packaging), Original Bean for coffee (net positive carbon footprint for each bag used), and Ethical Butcher (working with farmers practising regenerative agriculture to supply exceptional quality ethical cuts of meat). Barge East also offers a curated wine list sourced from sustainable European vineyards - all transported over land to minimise carbon footprint of transportation. All wines are vegan and sustainably certified (or working towards certification). The cocktail menu maximises use of produce from the Barge East Gardens, as well as using sustainable suppliers such as Discarded Spirits, a company who utilise products that would typically go to waste, such as cascara berry, Banana peel & grape skins from Pomace. Barge East opened in 2018, after co-founders Tommo, Ryan, and Blandy sailed a 125 year-old Dutch barge across the North Sea, before making its home on the River Lee canal as a sustainability focused restaurant centred around high-quality, modern British dishes. In 2020, Barge East opened their adjacent on-shore space - the organic Barge East Gardens. Using a variety of up-cycled and repurposed materials, and featuring over 37 different types of plants and produce, visitors can enjoy alfresco dining while surrounded by the organic, growing produce and ingredients used across the menus, providing a farm to table service. Their sustainability credentials have earned them widespread recognition as a leader in the hospitality industry, and are listed on the 360° Eat Guide to pioneering restaurants in sustainability and gastronomy.
