This simple bistro sits on a steep city centre street that once formed the route from the castle to the quayside. It has a concrete floor, a breeze ...

Excellent
Due to the current situation we only venture out to eat every 2 weeks so we are very selective about where we choose to go. Route is wonderful and the food, ambience and service never disappoints
Love Route have been a few times-the food never disappoints. Service is always great-wine is excellent-I really like the carmenere. Atmosphere is lively enough but not so it disturbs the meal. It’s a gem of a local business.
Really lovely to return to one of our favourite restaurants. The flavours were as gorgeous and inventive as ever. I’m not a bread lover except when it comes to theirs. Really good all round.
2nd visit to Route on 2nd visit to Newcastle. And will be back! Great everything - food new and different and delicious. Any kitchen that can make cabbage lettuce and spinach in one dish taste that good .........just saying. Celeriac soup and black bread HEAVEN!
Only restaurant in Newcastle that I would regularly go back to, if they maintain the standards and quality of our meal last night. Dishes were all exceptional. Service discreet and space was attractive. 10/10.
This is a gorgeous little restaurant, the service is relaxed and friendly and the food is outstanding. Great to be able to see into the kitchen to see how these fabulous dishes are created. Well done guys. We Also felt very safe and relaxed with everything they have put in place for these difficult times. 5 star. This was our first time out to a restaurant since lockdown & they made the experience a very pleasant one. We will be back.
Great to revisit in this difficult time. Welcoming staff cool eclectic music and fascinating subtle food combinations. A masterpiece. Worth a visit to Newcastle in itself!
We went to Route on friends recommendation and weren’t disappointed. Varied menu with some unusual dishes-all very tasty. We particularly enjoyed the courgette with truffle oil and the fishcakes
High quality food in an extremely pleasant atmosphere. I particularly enjoyed the very intense crispy herring and the picante lemon sole.
Great experience start to finish. Food was 10/10 especially considering its price. Already booked to go again!
food was good but waitress didn't appear to understand the menu - she recommended sharing all things. I specifically asked whether the items that appeared to be main courses were for sharing or not and she said yes, that they were all sliced up for sharing. They weren't and when 2 main courses arrived for 3 of us, this wasn't easily shared and probably not enough food. Also, we asked for chips for 3 people and got 8 thick cut chips. A bit odd.
Always excellent food here.
A great atmosphere but I felt like the restaurant week menu did not showcase the attention to detail and the quality that I have previously experienced at Route. I will no doubt return as hopefully this was a one off issue.
Super tasty food
First class, best we've had in Newcastle
All the dishes we ordered were lovely and each very distinctive! It was expensive for small plates however completely worth it due to the quality
Fantastic. The only way to sum up Saturday night's visit. Stand-out dishes? All of them, we had a mix of oysters, small plates, large plates, a blackboard special and a dessert and shared. If I had to choose one dish as the best, which would be difficult as they were all perfect, it would be the Halibut off the specials board. Simply epic. Perfect piece of fish cooked literally to perfection by John Calton himself. What a chef. Great food, great service, great atmosphere and IMO priced just right. Worth every penny. Will be back soon.
Great atmosphere, great food
Superb restaurant and lunch. Cooking of the highest standard, efficient, friendly service.
This restaurant is well worth its Bib. Friendly, helpful staff. Warm atmosphere. Splendid food from locally sourced produce. Lindisfarne oysters were delicious, as was the bread. Very difficult to choose which of the tempting dishes from, the admirably short, menu to have. Cod and smoked mussels was delicious (although it could have done with a little more lettuce). A good spread of wines, with plenty by the glass. A cracking restaurant.
