Famous for its league-table-topping university, Cambridge has as much to offer to gourmands as it does intellectuals. A sit down at one of the many restaurants in Cambridge is the ideal way to punctuate a day’s sightseeing in this history-packed location. Cambridge restaurants include many smart, creative independent venues, and many interesting British and European cuisine varieties are up for grabs here.
For something extra-special, head to Michelin-starred Alimentum, which is just minutes on foot from Cambridge’s main rail station, and city centre parking. The AA Restaurant Guide commended Alimentum for its ‘strong ethical principles and classy, contemporary cuisine’. Chef Mark Poynton and his team treat diners to an exciting modern European menu. If you simply can’t choose from the many tempting treats, there’s a chef’s 10-course tasting menu to be enjoyed.
For relaxed comfort in a traditional setting, head to the top-rated George and Dragon in Elsworth, just outside central Cambridge. Super-fresh local seafood and a selection of juicy steaks are the order of the day here. Though they’re a pub, the George and Dragon also take their wines seriously, with an impressive list of around 50 bottles. Top tip: pop along on Wednesday evening for a mouth-watering fish and chip supper. Booking recommended.
