But the environment is too crowded (imagine Monday night)
Fenchurch Street, Aldgate and Tower Hill are all in the City of London, a fascinating, history-packed area that’s steeped in tradition. Although it attracts fewer tourists than neighbouring Westminster, London’s City was the ‘original’ London, and several pieces of its medieval architecture still remain. It’s now a smart, fast-paced business district, where ancient traditions and the modern world of commerce exist in compelling contrast. Food-wise, some of London’s finest eating is to be done here; Michelin-starred and celebrity chefs run several restaurants in Fenchurch Street and other areas of the City. The area is also packed with traditional pubs, and visiting one or two (or more!) of these is a vital part of the City experience.
For something very smart indeed, go for Caravaggio. The setting is splendid, with high ceilings and Art Deco grandeur. The restaurant’s calm, subdued atmosphere is a welcome escape from the thronging streets outside. Food-wise, Caravaggio does perfectly executed Italian, with dishes such as subtle saffron risotto with asparagus.
If you’re looking for Aldgate restaurants and would prefer something altogether more substantial, why not try the Missouri Angel? This North American-style restaurant specialises in the kind of dishes that would satisfy Desperate Dan. Missouri Angel’s menu includes a bountiful collection of steaks, garnished in a number of adventurous ways.
